Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) used SafeTrx Flotilla Event for the 2021 Queensland Endurance
Championships on the 18th September 2021. The Queensland Endurance Championships attracts competitors from all
over the state, providing an opportunity to showcase one of Queensland’s most iconic volunteer movements, Surf
Life Saving. Open to competitors from under-11 to masters, athletes compete in long distance disciplines,
including ocean swimming, board paddling, surf skiing, and beach running.
SafeTrx Flotilla Event tracked the ocean surf skiing downwind competitors over the 12km course. Event safety
on the water is paramount and the event organisers choose to use SafeTrx Flotilla Event so that the SLSQ
safety and emergency management team can monitor and track the event participants live via
the SafeTrx Flotilla Event website, which is fully integrated with Australian Volunteer Coast
Guard’s SafeTrx system. This allows both event rescue and Australian Volunteer Coast Guard SAR teams respond
to an emergency as quickly as possible if needed.
This year’s event was held at Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park SLSC. Ryan Bennett, SLSQ Sports Events Coordinator,
said “Each season, Surf Life Saving Queensland’s premier sporting events continue to grow in stature and in
competitor numbers. We’ve seen SafeTrx Flotilla Event used in other paddling events here such as The Doctor
and the South Australian Ocean Paddlers series, so it makes sense that we use this proven technology to
provide our water safety teams a live feed of the exact location of all of our paddlers for the duration of
the race. The added bonus is that for the first time, spectators can watch the race unfold in real time via
the live tracking website. We’re pretty excited about this.”
Nessa Malone, SafeTrx Product Manager said “We’re delighted that SLSQ choose SafeTrx Flotilla Event for the
2021 Queensland Endurance Championships. Flotilla feeds competition organisers real time information on the
location of the field, aiding in the positioning of our water safety crews which is a valuable asset to
extreme water sports like downwind surfski paddling. Having Flotilla in place for the Queensland Endurance
Championships means competitors can relax and enjoy the race knowing that SLSQ have this tracking and safety
          technology in place.”
